LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is one of the world's most widely used green building certification systems, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council® (USGBC).

 

LEED promotes sustainable building practices by encouraging:

  • Lower environmental impact through reduced greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and resource consumption.

  • Energy and water efficiency to help lower operating costs throughout a building's lifecycle.

  • Healthier indoor environments by recognizing the use of low-emitting materials, improved ventilation, and strategies that enhance occupant comfort and well-being.

  • Reduced embodied carbon through the selection of lower-impact building materials and the use of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to demonstrate environmental performance.

LEED v4.1 focuses on improving building efficiency across energy, water, and materials, with sustainability largely driven by incremental performance improvements and design-based credits.

 

LEED v5 shifts the framework toward climate impact reduction, placing stronger emphasis on whole-life carbon, embodied carbon, and actual operational emissions, with greater weight on decarbonization and climate resilience.

  • Focus: Efficiency (v4.1) vs. decarbonization and climate outcomes (v5) 

  • Carbon: Indirect emphasis vs. central metric (operational + embodied carbon) 

  • Materials: Transparency-focused vs. stronger push for low-carbon and circular materials 

  • Resilience: Optional/limited vs. more explicit climate risk integration 

  • Performance: Design intent vs. stronger emphasis on real-world performance outcomes 

  • Reducing operational carbon: LEED v5 prioritizes energy efficiency, electrification, and renewable energy, helping projects lower the operational emissions that the AIA 2030 Commitment seeks to minimize.

  • Addressing embodied carbon: LEED v5 places greater emphasis on selecting low-carbon building materials and using products with Environmental Product Declarations, supporting the AIA's goal of reducing emissions associated with construction materials.

  • Encouraging high-performance design: LEED v5 promotes optimized building envelopes, efficient HVAC systems, and energy modeling, which supports the overall improvement of building performance and helps projects meet AIA 2030 energy reduction targets.
